Three women got the 2011 Peace Nobel Prize
In Oslo the Prize was awarded to Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of Liberia, to her countrywoman Leymah Gbowee and to Tawakkul Karman from Yemen for their non-violent battle for women's safety and rights to participate in the peace-building process. The Nobel Committee explained how the choice of this year wants to be a recognition of the empowerment of women, particularly in the developing countries.
Ellen Johnson Sirleaf is the first female president of an African state, Liberia, democratically elected in 2005, she will face new elections later this month; Ms Sirleaf, 72 years old, studied economics at Harvard and worked in her country to promote peace and women rights.
Leymah Gbowee, 39 years old, also a Liberian, nicknamed "the warrior of peace" is a peace activist in her country, she organized a group of Muslim and Christian women to challenge the lords of the Civil War
Tawakkul Karman, 32 years old, Yemeni activist for human rights and democracy, particularly active in the promotion of women rights in her country. Yemen is indeed afflicted by serious social and political disorders. Karman is the founder of the magazine "Women Journalists without Chains"
The Nobel Peace Prize this year was also assigned to the Auschwitz-Birkenau Foundation. It’s been 65 years since the liberation by the allied forces of the Auschwitz concentration camp; the foundation is taking care since of the maintainance of the Memory Places.
